Harvesting corn for silage at the ideal whole plant moisture is vital to get proper fermentation for corn silage preservation. To help aid in this decision, the Calumet County Forage Council will be hosting Corn Silage Dry Down Days on Wednesdays during the month of September from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm. The first dry down day will be held on Wednesday, September 6, at the Tom Biese Farm located at N2818 State Road 57, New Holstein. The second dry down day is scheduled for Wednesday, September 13 at Country Visions Cooperative in Chilton. Schneider Farms, W2920 Faro Springs Road, Hilbert, will be the dry down host on Wednesday, September 20. Finally, on Wednesday, September 27, Greg Bohman, N8819 County PP, Brillion will host the final dry down day.
For sampling guidelines, collect three to five stalks from a representative area within the field (cut at chopper height). Include your name, address, phone number, hybrid planted, relative maturity and planting date. Once samples are cut do not delay bringing them to the site so that moisture is not lost.
